United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Francois Hollande made broad statements today in a pre-emptive war of words on a perceived new war by US President Elect Trump on the global war on anthropogenic climate change (Co2). From the article comes these quotes :
"What was once unthinkable has become unstoppable" and "The [Paris] agreement was irreversible"
It is not surprising to see politicians make claims that are both untrue and absurd. These architects of the Paris agreement, who are life long politicians, no doubt believe in the scientific certainty of anthropogenic climate change. What they seem to not understand is the fact that any agreement that can be entered into can also be exited in a myriad of ways. In addition, the Paris agreement was not binding upon signing, and has not been put in front of the House or Senate as of yet, a process which is required by law to make it binding.
These minor details aside, we hope that the Secretary-General and President Hollande are able to retain their legacy Paris Agreement, with or without the United States. If the world's politicians really believe in anthropogenic climate change, they indeed should only care how much they emit. The United States dropping out should be of no consequence to the IPCC or the Paris Agreement.
